Beyond The Box Set
Being Benjamin Button

Being Benjamin Button

April 4, 2019

Over the course of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a man lives an entire lifetime in reverse. After sitting through the three-hour runtime, we felt like we could relate to the experience.

Directed by David Fincher from the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a fascinating concept with a fundamentally boring character at the centre. Join us on this week's podcast as we discuss extremely variable CGI work, the intense ick-factor of the old man/little girl love story and why Tilda Swinton gave us a very British case of second-hand tea anxiety...

We also have a go at pitching some sequel ideas, including some thoughts on how other notable directors might have handled this story, and a crossover with one of our favourite camp classics from a past episode...

-----

Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a twist. Each week, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequels, prequels and spin-offs to bring them back to the big screen.

Our show has been listed as a 'Podcast of The Week' by The Guardian and Podbean, and as a 'Binge-Worthy Podcast' by Apple. We release a new episode every Friday morning, so hit subscribe to make sure you never miss an episode.

John Carter Must Die (feat. Fake Nerd Podcast)

John Carter Must Die (feat. Fake Nerd Podcast)

March 29, 2019

John Carter of Earth? John Carter of Mars? Frankly, as far as we're concerned this unholy mess of a movie should have been called John Carter and the completely incomprehensible plot.

Directed by Pixar legend Andrew Stanton and starring Battleship himbo Taylor Kitsch, the long gestating big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' highly influential adventure novel was a disastrous box office bomb on release in 2012 - although it has since developed a small but vocal band of defenders.

One of those defenders is Brandon T McClure of the Fake Nerd Podcast, who gamely joins us this week to explain his love for this movie and attempt to unpick the seriously overstuffed plot for our benefit. He also sticks around for the usual drinking games and, of course, our attempts at pitching a workable sequel - although given the financials, we wouldn't hold our breath for any of them getting green lit by a studio. Not on this planet, anyway...

Beyond The Box Set is a successful movie podcast in which two intrepid hosts journey through the history of classic standalone cinema - then proceed to take a wrecking ball to each and every one of them with some truly ludicrous sequel pitches to bring them back to the big screen.

The Dressmaker 2: The Hemsworth Curse

The Dressmaker 2: The Hemsworth Curse

March 16, 2019

We're back, you bastards! This week's episode may be arriving slightly late, but we hope the choice of movie justifies the wait. The Dressmaker is a real curio - a hilarious Australian revenge comedy/drama starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth and a lot of hats, wigs and fabulous evening gowns!

If you've never seen this movie before, we strongly recommend that you seek it out before listening to this episode - it's an absolute riot, and some of the plot twists are so out-there that we'd hate to ruin them for you! But do make sure you come back, because we have a *lot* to talk about...

Clue 2: Into The Hasbro-Verse

Clue 2: Into The Hasbro-Verse

February 28, 2019

Was it Mr Green in the Hall with the Revolver? Or perhaps Mrs Peacock in the Billiard room with the Lead Pipe? All the cards are on the table this week, as we conclude our 'movies based on games' mini-series with an episode dedicated to the classic murder mystery farce 'Clue'.

Friend of the show Julio Olivera from The Contrarians Podcast joins us this week as we compare notes on convoluted plotting, scenery-chewing character actors, Yvette's ridiculous cleavage and much more...

Inspired by the forthcoming reboot starring - sigh - Ryan Reynolds, we also pitch our own sequel ideas for this classic board game adaptation, featuring re-castings and plot twists galore!

Scrooged 2: Oliver Twisted (feat. 2 Geeks 2 Movies)

Scrooged 2: Oliver Twisted (feat. 2 Geeks 2 Movies)

December 27, 2018

A cynical 80s update of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Bill Murray in the central role, Scrooged has all the elements of a festive home run. Yet back in 1988 critics received the movie like a lump of festive coal, and even Murray himself was publicly critical of his performance.

Nevertheless, years of TV syndication have helped Scrooged to endure as a cult holiday classic. Did the critics get it wrong, or has Murray's boundless charisma hoodwinked contemporary viewers into looking back at the film with rose tinted glasses?

To help us find the answer, we're re-joined this week by our most consistently available guest, Ross Burton from 2 Geeks 2 Movies. Together we discuss how Scrooged compares to other popular A Christmas Carol adaptations, whether we really believe Murray's change of character will last beyond the Holiday season, and why, depending on who you ask, Carol Kane's psychotic sugar plum fairy is either the best or the worst part of this movie...

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we sit down in front of a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas we can think of to bring them back to the big screen. Clocking in at almost 100 episodes and counting, there's no cinematic sacred cow we're not more than willing to defile.

We release a new episode every Friday morning, so hit subscribe to make sure you don't miss out, and please leave us a rating and review if you'd really like to help us spread the word. Edward Scissorhands 2: Rock, Paper, Scissorhands… (feat. Blokebusters)

Edward Scissorhands 2: Rock, Paper, Scissorhands… (feat. Blokebusters)

December 6, 2018

Is Edward Scissorhands a Christmas movie? Possibly not, but it features snow, Christmas trees and an underlying air of sadness, which makes it close enough for us to crowbar Tim Burton's melancholy classic into our annual festive mini-season.

This week, long-time friend of the show Paul Hawkins from Blokebusters joins us to discuss Winona Ryder's old lady voice, Dianne Wiest's questionable parenting methods, whether it's still OK to appreciate Johnny Depp's legitimately brilliant performance in this movie and more...

As usual, we also spend some time brainstorming potential sequel ideas, including Edward's long-overdue trial for the murder of Anthony Michael Hall, an origin story that brings together two classic Tim Burton properties and a crossover that attempts to explain some of the more... eccentric design choices in the original movie...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, two creative movie geeks compete to pitch sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas for classic standalone movies. We're almost 100 episodes deep and we have no intention of slowing down, so dive in for the only Podcast (that we know of) to combine classic movie chat with hilarious, frequently unfilmable fan fiction.

We release a new episode ever Friday morning, so please hit subscribe to ensure you never miss an episode. We also really appreciate ratings and reviews, which really help us to attract new listeners.

If you're a super fan of the show, you can also show your appreciation by supporting our Patreon for as little as $2 per month. The Birdcage 2: Starina Rides Again

The Birdcage 2: Starina Rides Again

November 23, 2018

Put simply, 'The Birdcage' is one of the funniest movies ever made. Yes, it's a remake of the much-loved French classic La cage aux folles, but it's elevated above standard remake fare by inspired casting across the board and a strong emotional centre in the midst of all the camp farce.

A sequel without Robin Williams is obviously almost impossible to imagine, but we did find ourselves wondering how Nathan Lane's flamboyant Albert would cope with the loss of his remarkably patient life partner. Not to mention the tantalising/terrifying notion of how Agador Spartacus' personal style might have evolved as he entered his mid-fifties...

-----

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Sometimes they're completely ridiculous, other times they're strangely inspired, but either way they're guaranteed to out a new perspective on some of your favourite movies.

Our show is available on all good podcasting platforms, including iTunes, Spotify, aCast and Google Play. Muppet Pulp Fiction

Muppet Pulp Fiction

September 27, 2018

It's the movie that revitalised John Travolta's career, made Uma Thurman an instant icon and proved that there's quite literally no hairstyle that Samuel L Jackson couldn't pull off. We are of course talking about Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

Joining us this week for another special crossover event, returning guest Ross Burton of 2 Geeks 2 Movies once again swallows his abiding hatred of unnecessary sequels and helps us to pitch-some potential spin-offs to wrap up the many (intentional) loose ends left dangling by the original movie.

From how Mia met Marsellus to the tragic backstory of 'The Gimp', there's no plot thread we're leaving uncovered - except the one about that damn briefcase. Even we have to draw the line somewhere.
