#94 | Edward Scissorhands 2: Rock, Paper, Scissorhands… (feat. Blokebusters)

December 6, 2018
00:0000:00

Is Edward Scissorhands a Christmas movie? Possibly not, but it features snow, Christmas trees and an underlying air of sadness, which makes it close enough for us to crowbar Tim Burton's melancholy classic into our annual festive mini-season.

This week, long-time friend of the show Paul Hawkins from Blokebusters joins us to discuss Winona Ryder's old lady voice, Dianne Wiest's questionable parenting methods, whether it's still OK to appreciate Johnny Depp's legitimately brilliant performance in this movie and more...

As usual, we also spend some time brainstorming potential sequel ideas, including Edward's long-overdue trial for the murder of Anthony Michael Hall, an origin story that brings together two classic Tim Burton properties and a crossover that attempts to explain some of the more... eccentric design choices in the original movie...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, two creative movie geeks compete to pitch sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas for classic standalone movies. If you're a super fan of the show, you can also show your appreciation by supporting our Patreon for as little as $2 per month. #92 | The Birdcage 2: Starina Rides Again

November 23, 2018
00:0000:00

Put simply, 'The Birdcage' is one of the funniest movies ever made. Yes, it's a remake of the much-loved French classic La cage aux folles, but it's elevated above standard remake fare by inspired casting across the board and a strong emotional centre in the midst of all the camp farce.

A sequel without Robin Williams is obviously almost impossible to imagine, but we did find ourselves wondering how Nathan Lane's flamboyant Albert would cope with the loss of his remarkably patient life partner. Not to mention the tantalising/terrifying notion of how Agador Spartacus' personal style might have evolved as he entered his mid-fifties...

-----

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Sometimes they're completely ridiculous, other times they're strangely inspired, but either way they're guaranteed to out a new perspective on some of your favourite movies.

Our show is available on all good podcasting platforms, including iTunes, Spotify, aCast and Google Play. You can also sign up to our Patreon for as little as $2 per month to access a wide range of bonus content, including our exclusive spin-off show Beyond BTBS, a regular promo slot and the opportunity to choose a film for us to cover on a future episode.

#84 | Muppet Pulp Fiction

September 27, 2018
00:0000:00

It's the movie that revitalised John Travolta's career, made Uma Thurman an instant icon and proved that there's quite literally no hairstyle that Samuel L Jackson couldn't pull off. We are of course talking about Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

Joining us this week for another special crossover event, returning guest Ross Burton of 2 Geeks 2 Movies once again swallows his abiding hatred of unnecessary sequels and helps us to pitch-some potential spin-offs to wrap up the many (intentional) loose ends left dangling by the original movie.

From how Mia met Marsellus to the tragic backstory of 'The Gimp', there's no plot thread we're leaving uncovered - except the one about that damn briefcase. Even we have to draw the line somewhere.

September 20, 2018

How far would you go to be with your children? In the classic 90s comedy Mrs Doubtfire, Robin Williams goes truly goes above and beyond to spend some quality time with his family, with predictably hilarious results.

Tune into this week's episode for our thoughts on the difference between a good Robin Williams movie and a bad one, the irresistible charm of Sally Field and why some 90s comedy tropes have aged better than others, plus much more as we pitch sequels to this timeless comedy classic...

#82 | The Big Lebowski 2: Finding Donny (feat. Genuine Chit Chat)

September 13, 2018
00:0000:00

With an endlessly quoteable script from The Coen Brothers and career-defining performances from Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, The Big Lebowski is probably the ultimate slacker comedy. Mike Burton from Genuine Chit Chat joins us this week to discuss his abiding love of the movie - and to help us to pitch a few sequels.

Tune in as we discuss White Russians, incomprehensible kidnapping plots, John's strong erotic reaction to Jeff Bridges acid dancing and how this movie unexpectedly brought out Harry's reactionary side.

As always, after we're done waxing nostalgic about the movie, we move on to pitching our own fantasy sequel ideas - all of which mysterious hinge on the tragic fate of Donny, the unsung hero of The Dude's bowling team. Can our storytelling skills finally grant him the justice he deserves? There's only one way to find out...

#81 | Burlesque 2: Season of the Bitch

September 6, 2018
00:0000:00

It's a passion! It's a fashion! It's... a campy wig explosion with terrible acting, a nonsensical plot and far, far too many characters! In this very special edition of Beyond The Box Set, we're joined by returning guests Oli Ajulo and Louise Ball to discuss Burlesque - the 2010 movie musical starring Cher, Christina Aguilera and precisely zero nipple tassles.

Written and directed by Steven Antin - who we suspect might possibly be a well-connected gay man with no self control - Burlesque may have been a donkey at the box office, but chances are it'll be screening at drag bars and bad movie events until the end of time.

Tune into this week's episode to hear our doomed attempts at making sense of the plot, our theory that Christina Aguilera's character is quite obviously the villain of the movie and some extremely variable Cher impersonations...

In a twist on our usual format, we also formed competing teams with our two guests to present a pair of sequel ideas that include a musical riff on the Scream franchise and a prequel that attempts to clear the name of one of the original movie's most unfairly maligned characters...

Beyond The Box Set is a movie review podcast with a twist. #80 | Death Becomes Her 2: Ghost Protocol

August 30, 2018
00:0000:00

We were in dire need of a comedy palate cleanser after sitting through the dreadful 'Sausage Party' for last week's episode, so John decided that the time was right to bring out an all-time favourite. Death Becomes Her is probably the only movie that gives you two Oscar-winning actresses rising from the grave and beating each other over the head with shovels.

Directed by the always visually inventive Robert Zemeckis, what Death Becomes Her lacks in subtlety, it more than makes up for in crazed, campy and endlessly quotable entertainment. Join us as we discuss warring divas, Isabella Rosellini going full panto and why we love Bruce Willis playing cartoonishly against type.

We also put our heads together to pitch some belated sequel ideas, which this week include a global immortality epidemic, the return of the shadowy Big Daddy corporation and a conspiracy theory involving another iconic - and strangely ageless - Hollywood A-Lister.

-----

At Beyond The Box Set, we believe that every great movie deserves a faintly unnecessary sequel. Each week, our two hosts take a look at a classic standalone feature film and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen.

#78 | A Knight’s Tale 2: The Gorgeous Ladies of Jousting

August 17, 2018
00:0000:00

Fonging hell! We've got a real crowd pleaser to talk about this week - gleefully anachronistic jousting adventure A Knight's Tale, the starring the much-missed Heath Ledger.

Released in 2001, A Knight's Tale helped to establish Ledger as a reliable leading man, after well-received supporting turns in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Patriot. It also featured a memorable cast of supporting characters including Alan Tudyk, Mark Addy and future Marvel star Paul Bettany in the role of a loudmouthed, frequently naked Geoffrey Chaucer.

This week's movie was selected by special guest Jason Croxon, host of the A Conversation With... podcast. Jason joins us on this episode to discuss olde worlde relationship politics, variable accent work, scenery chewing extras and much more.

As always, we also spend the second half of the episode pitching our own fantasy sequel ideas to this feelgood romp - which sadly have to work around the less than cheerful fact of Ledger's tragic death in 2008. How could a spin-off movie ever work in his absence? That's a question we challenge ourselves to answer this week. Tune in now to see how we fared...

-----

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a classic standalone movie that, for whatever reason, never got an official sequel. Then we compete to come up with our own pitches to bring that movie back to the big screen in 2018. It's a pointless thought experiment that's already guided us through 78 episodes with no sign of slowing down...

#76 | Blue Velvet - An Antz Perspective

August 2, 2018
00:0000:00

Blue Velvet - an iconic movie of the 80s, but perhaps not the most compatible movie for the consumption of omelettes. That's just one of the many lessons we learned while attempting to make sense of David Lynch's twisted suburban noir.

Join us in this week's episode as we discuss the sinister appeal of Kyle Maclachlan, Isabella Rosellini's rather limited nightclub repertoir, and why, in a movie filled with terror and violence, a Roy Orbison lip sync number might just be the scariest scene of all...

David Lynch doesn't really do traditional sequels, but we like to think he'd approve of some of our sequel ideas this week, including an unlikely children's movie set inside a certain severed appendage, a sitcom retelling - complete with laugh track - and a Dennis Hopper origin story with some controversial re-casting choices...

Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a difference. Each week, our two intrepid hosts discuss a classic piece of standalone cinema, and compete to come up with sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. #75 | Drag Me To Hell II: Justin’s Long Con

July 26, 2018
00:0000:00

Talking goats, doomed kittens and a *lot* of projectile vomiting, Drag Me To Hell found Sam Raimi back in his comedy-horror element after his lucrative turn behind the Spider Man franchise. But does it have the potential to become an Evil Dead-esque franchise?

For this week's episode of Beyond The Box Set, we discuss the extreme pettiness of Gypsy curses, Octavia Spencer's blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo and the wonderfully ludicrous concept of Professor Justin Long, before pitching our own ideas for extending the franchise - including a sequel set entirely in hell itself, and the unlikely but strangely compelling confluence of Star Wars, Jade Pinkett-Smith and Sam Raimi.

Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a devilish twist. Every week, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. You can find our show on all good podcasting platforms, including iTunes, Spotify and Stitcher - plus we also offer a wide variety of bonus content on Patreon, including reviews of current cinema releases and the opportunity to pick a movie for us to bastardise on a future episode - all for as little as $2 per month thanks to our pay as you feel tiered sponsorship system.
