Winter’s Tale 2: A Henchman’s Tale

Winter’s Tale 2: A Henchman’s Tale

December 21, 2020

When Martin Scorsese declares your movie's plot to be 'unfilmable', it's generally not a good sign. So it was with Winters Tale' - a well regarded 1983 novel that turned out to be a truly disastrous 2014 movie.

In this week's podcast, we break down one of the most bizarre big screen follies we've ever encountered - from the impenetrable back story, to Russell Crowe's ludicrous Irish accent to Colin Farrell's ever-changing hairstyle and a bewildering cameo from Will Smith.

Along the way, we'll also brainstorm some drinking games, check in with out listeners and pitch some sequel concepts that should absolutely never be considered in real life. All in a week's work, in other words!

Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a difference. Every week, your intrepid hosts (us) watch a classic slice of standalone cinema, then compete to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen.

Reindeer Games 2: Away In a Manger

Reindeer Games 2: Away In a Manger

December 7, 2020

Our alternative festive season continues this week with Reindeer Games, a bizarre attempt to put a festive twist on a Tarantino-style crime thriller.

Released in February 2000 to terrible reviews and negligible box office, the film stars Ben Affleck as Rudi, an ex-con who poses as his deceased former cellmate in order to win the heart of a lonely woman played by Charlize Theron. However, he quickly regrets his deception when he's dragged into a complex criminal plot to stage a heist at a local casino.

In this week's episode, we discuss overly complex plot mechanics, bizarrely shoehorned-in Christmas references, disturbing kissing technique and much more. As always, we also throw in some drinking games, catch up with our listeners and pitch some improbable sequel ideas!

Absolutely Anything

Absolutely Anything

November 2, 2020

Absolutely Anything has all the makings of a classic British comedy. Written and directed by a member of Monty Python, headlined by an A-list cast and featuring a voice role from the iconic Robin Williams... what could go wrong?

Sadly the answer is 'just about everything', for Absolutely Anything is a dismal failure that barely made a blip on the box office when it was released in 2015. In this week's podcast, we break down where it all went wrong and attempt to pitch sequels to a movie nobody wanted to see more from...

August 3, 2020

We had a realisation last week that in almost four years of podcasting, we've never covered a Will Smith movie. Obviously, this had to be rectified, and what better start for the king of franchise movies than a rare, notorious misfire like Wild, Wild West?

Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on weird racial humour,  Kenneth Branagh going full Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek in the most thankless role of her career and much more, plus all our usual drinking games, listener submissions and drinking games!

Contagion, Actually

Contagion, Actually

March 28, 2020

It's the all-star popcorn thriller that accidentally became a haunting documentary... but is Steven Soderbergh's Contagion actually a great movie, or just an unexpectedly relevant one?

In this week's podcast, we discuss film star hygiene, the perils of plotting an ensemble movie, unnecessary slut-shaming and more as we take a deep dive into a once-forgotten movie that's suddenly back on everyone's radar.

We also have our usual round of drinking games, listener submissions and a sequel pitch that ask the vital question - what if the events of this film invaded the reality of a classic festive Rom Com? Intrigued? Tune in to find out more...

Christmas With The Kranks 2: Ripping off The Kranks

Christmas With The Kranks 2: Ripping off The Kranks

December 27, 2019

For our final festive selection of 2019, our Patreon supporters have inflicted a real turkey on us. Released in 2004, Christmas With The Kranks is a dire yuletide comedy in which wealthy boomers Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis battle an insane horde of Santa obsessives while attempting to skip out on the Holiday season for a year. If that sounds like a fun premise, trust us, we're over-selling it...

Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on feline cruelty, out-of-place cancer sub-plots and a level of unexamined privilige and flagrant over-spending that makes The Holiday look like a Ken Loach movie...

As always, we've also got drinking games, listener submissions and our own sequel ideas to give this cinematic lump of coal some kind of redemptive quality. The perfect antidote to Festive fatigue!

Left Behind 2: Highway To Hell (feat. Chris Scott)

Left Behind 2: Highway To Hell (feat. Chris Scott)

June 28, 2019

For the second time this month, our disaster movie season lands on the bizarre latter-day career choices of Nicholas Cage. Based on a bestselling Christian book series, 2014's Left Behind is a low-budget, shoddily made train wreck that not even Jesus could save from box office oblivion.

With the help of our special guest Chris Scott from the Ask Karen podcast, we spend this week's episode discussing important spiritual matters such as Nicholas Cage's alarming headpiece, the suspiciously porn star-sounding character names, dwarf kicking, air hostess slut shaming and much more.

Along the way we also have the usual collection of drinking games - and trust us, you'll need it for this one - listener submissions and of course, sequel pitches! Given that this movie was intended to kickstart a nine-part franchise, theoretically we should have plenty to work with. You'll have to tune in to discover just how that turned out...
